LEARN THE LINGO
You don’t have to play like a pro to sound like one. Before you hit the court, brush up on your vocab.
DINK
A soft, short shot just over the net, meant to land in the kitchen and make it tough for your opponent to smash back.
VOLLEY
Hitting the ball before it bounces. It’s a quick reflex move often done at the net.
POACH
When one doubles partner crosses over into the other’s side to take a shot, usually to surprise the opponents.
KITCHEN
The non-volley zone near the net where you’re not allowed to smash or volley the ball; it’s where the dinking happens.
ERNE
A sneaky shot where you hit the ball while standing outside the sideline, usually after jumping over the kitchen.
LOB
A high, arching shot meant to go over your opponent’s head, pushing them to the back of the court.
